WM Pushes Forward with Landfill Expansion Plans in Pennsylvania, Florida

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): WM announced significant progress on its ambitions to expand landfills, particularly in Florida and Pennsylvania.

Last Wednesday, the company achieved a significant milestone when it was granted an exemption from steep slope limits by Plainfield Township. This will bring the corporation one step closer to adding another 20 years to the Grand Central Landfill in Pennsylvania. It should be mentioned that the landfill has over five years of capacity left.

WM will be able to proceed with the design for a new 81-acre cell on the property next to the current landfill with the Township's consent. It stated that the site will continue to produce up to 3,000 tons per day in the interim. Notably, WM has been awaiting this approval for over five years.

The state's Department of Environmental Protection and the township's board of supervisors must now approve the expansion.

Furthermore, WM has reached settlements in litigation brought by the communities of Deerfield Beach and Coconut Creek against the proposed expansion of the Monarch Hill Landfill in Florida. It should be mentioned that Broward County had previously approved the facility expansion.

As per the agreement, WM has committed to paying each of the two communities a host fee of 5%. At the enlarged plant, it will also install the required groundwater monitoring systems and odor-control measures. It has also consented to rename the website.
