U.S. EPA Declared Recipients of Recycling Infrastructure Grants


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the beneficiaries of the $105 million Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grants. The grants are aimed at improving recycling, waste management and organics systems infrastructure of communities across the nation.

According to EPA, a total of nearly $73 million in recycling infrastructure grants will be distributed to as many as 23 communities. Another $32 million in grants will be allocated to states and territories to fund waste management implementation programs, including data collection. The grants are being described by the EPA as the largest recycling investment in almost three decades.

The major projects to receive funding include the Baltimore solar-powered composting facility, Minneapolis transfer station, new Lucas County Materials Recovery Facility and programs aimed at improving residential organics collection at Bozeman, Montana, EPA press release said.

EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe noted that almost 76% of the grant funding supports projects in “disadvantaged” areas. Additionally, the grants are expected to create jobs across rural and urban areas, McCabe added.
