TerraCycle Foundation Removed 2 Million Pounds of Waste from Waterways


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Non-profit TerraCycle Foundation announced that it has reached an important milestone by removing over 2 million pounds of waste from rivers, canals and waterways. This is roughly equivalent to the weight of more than eight blue whales, it said.

Since its inception, the Foundation has been targeting at destroying marine pollution at its source. As per studies, rivers, canals and waterways have been found responsible for nearly 80% of the marine pollution. The efforts by the Foundation ensure that waste from these sources never reach the ocean.

For instance, the Foundation has joined hands with local community and various government organizations to implement river traps in canals throughout Bangkok, Thailand. This helps in recovery of waste directly from water. The collected waste is sorted and plastic waste are recycled. The project, apart from offering regular employment opportunities to local population, has also delivered cleaner and healthier communities.

James Scott, Executive Director of the TerraCycle Global Foundation noted that it plans to replicate worldwide its holistic approach to reducing plastic waste in waterways. In addition, it plans to set up a central hub to coordinate waste management activities and educational programs.
