SWANA: Well-designed Systems to Lift Recycling Rates

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Speakers at the recent conference of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Pennsylvania chapter pointed out that creative features in well-designed recycling systems might increase recycling rates and prevent valuable items from ending up in landfills. The conference took place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from September 3rd to the 4th.

In a presentation, SCS Engineers' project director, Stacey Demers, pointed out that a well-designed recycling system needs to consider the target audience. If the system is not adapted to the daily reality of the target audience, it might not produce the intended outcomes. "People should be trained to use the existing programs in the best possible way instead of creating new systems," Demers continued.

The difficulties with recycling in multi-family dwellings were made clear by the meeting. When compared to single-family dwellings, the effectiveness of recycling messages is diminished by the frequent evictions of tenants from such structures. Better recycling collection and less contamination are frequently the outcomes of better bin location, it continued.

Additionally, it emphasised how important it is to support conveniently accessible convenience stores, particularly in remote areas and places without curbside recycling.
