Sumter County Declared Electronics and Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Sumter County has decided to schedule a drop-off day for residents to dispose of their old electronic devices and hazardous waste materials. The County anticipates huge volumes of such waste with the residents, especially after the holiday season which witnessed surge in purchases of new television sets and computers.

The Household Electronics and Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection, “Amnesty Day” will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at Lake Okahumpka Park, 6085 E State Road 44 in Wildwood. The event will accept electronics and hazardous waste from County residents free of charge.

Sunter County holds four Amnesty Days collection events every year. The event held on August 2022 Amnesty Day saw collection of 40,118 pounds of recycled material and 1,318 pounds of hazardous waste, which were disposed through incineration.

The items accepted during the drop-off event include automotive fluids and batteries, herbicides, propane tanks up to 25 pounds, cleaners, household electronics, rechargeable household batteries, latex and oil paints, solvents and pool chemicals.

It must be noted that Sumter County has nine Recycling Centers strategically located throughout the county. These centres are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m and Sunday 1:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. The County targets to divert 35% of materials entering the landfills, as its landfill is reportedly overflowing with reusable materials.
