The strike commenced in Boston area on July 1, 2025 when more than 400 unionized workers of Republic Services. Following this, Republic Services workers from across the nation joined the strike.
Teamsters Local 439 workers at Forward Landfill in Manteca had begun negotiations on the contract several months back. Initially, the company offered a 1.7% raise, which amounted to 30 cents per hour for employees making $20 an hour. It did not, however, address healthcare benefits. Before going on strike, the workers had been waiting for a better offer from the company for nearly a month.
