Smithtown Household Hazardous Waste Collection Draws Record Participation, Collects Over 19,000 Pounds


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Town of Smithtown successfully concluded its latest Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on July 11. The event witnessed a significant increase in resident participation.

Organized by the Town's Department of Environment and Waterways in partnership with the Municipal Services Facility, the event served 581 households, up sharply from 420 households during the corresponding collection drive in summer 2025.

The event led to safe disposal of thousands of pounds of hazardous materials. Residents brought in approximately 19,320 pounds (6.66 tons) of hazardous household waste, thus preventing harmful substances from entering landfills.

Items accepted included oil-based paints, gasoline, pesticides, fertilizers, acids, paint thinners, lithium batteries, mercury-containing products, propane tanks, and other hazardous chemicals that require specialized disposal.

As part of the initiative, nearly 150 Dunkin' gift cards were distributed by Reworldas reward to residents who recycled lithium-ion batteries, propane tanks, and mercury-containing devices. A total of 59 propane tanks were recovered and recycled during the event.

Town Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheimnoted that the strong public response is attributed to to growing environmental awareness within the community. Furthermore, he thanked municipal staff and partner organizations for thier support.

Smithtown's next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event for town residents is scheduled for October 3, 2026.
