SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Need to get rid of an old mattress?

Columbia County’s Solid Waste Division is gearing up to collect mattresses and box springs for free.

The event is part of the county’s efforts to reduce waste. Mattresses can be recycled into materials such as steel, wood, foam and fibers.

“Mattresses can take up a lot of space in the landfill, but many of the materials inside them can be recycled,” coordinator Tatum Flowers said. “This event gives residents a simple, free way to get rid of old mattresses and box springs while helping reduce waste in our community.”

From 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 12, residents can dispose of mattresses at the Columbia County Transfer Station, located at 1601 Railroad Ave. in St. Helens.

The county will accept mattresses made of steel innersprings, foam, fiber or other upholstery materials, as well as box springs used to support a mattress or sleep surface.

Items that will not be accepted for disposal include air mattresses, mattress pads or toppers, bed frames, pillows, cushions, sofa or futon beds, crib mattresses or water beds.

The disposal events are limited to Columbia County residents only, and the number of items that can be dropped off is capped at five per household.
