Senate Passes Bill to Boost EV Battery Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Senate last week saw passage of the Strategic EV Management Act as part of the annual defense budget. The defense bill now awaits final signature by President Joe Biden. The Act proposes a strategic action plan for reuse and recycling of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries in federal fleet vehicles. It must be noted that the EV bill was previously passed by the Senate as a standalone bill in September this year.

The bill calls for increased collaboration of federal agencies with the U.S. EPA as well as manufacturers and recyclers towards enhanced reuse and recycling of EV batteries. Furthermore, it promotes collaboration with scientists, labs and startups working on such projects. In addition, it also seeks a report on cost savings on account of using electric vehicles in the federal fleet over the ones using combustion engines.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah and co-sponsored by Sens. Gary Peters, D-Mich.; Richard Burr, R-N.C.; and Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn, who all welcomed its inclusion in the larger defense bill.
