Research: Curbside Recycling to Help Small Cities Reach Their Climate Goals

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): A study sponsored by the University of Florida highlights the significance of curbside recycling services. Citing it as an effective climate tool, curbside recycling services could help small cities reach their climate goals, it said.

The findings of the study comes at a time when more number of communities are adding new items such as glass and aluminum into the list of non-acceptable items. Moreover, several communities have even eliminated curbside pickup, saying that they could not meet the rising costs of such programs.

The research attempted to compare the monthly household cost of waste management and the greenhouse gas emissions that waste disposal generates, with and without recycling. It found that the level of emissions avoided from recycled waste offset carbon emissions from solid waste landfills.

The kerb-side recycling offers a return on investment similar to or better than other climate change mitigation strategies. By eliminating recycling, citizens and communities are actually wasting one of the best opportunities to mitigate climate change and preserve natural resources, the study noted.

Furthermore, the study noted that actual recycling costs have not increased significantly since the commencement of municipal recycling programs in the 1980s.
