Registration for Spring Electronics Recycling Event Coming Soon in Champaign-Urbana

Pre-registration is required to participate; online registration opens on Monday, April 17.

As in previous events in recent years, area residents can sign up for a 15-minute time slot to drop off their used electronic items for recycling, free of charge.

To register, simply visit the collection website beginning on April 17. If you need assistance with registering,  email recycling@champaignil.gov. As part of your registration, you will select one of the 15-minute time slots to bring your items. This helps keep wait times to a minimum. Spots do fill quickly, so set yourself a reminder for April 17.

The registration procedure has cut down on the longer wait times that had been the norm in previous events before the registration system was put in place. If you haven’t been to this event in a long time, the operation has been streamlined significantly.

What can be recycled

There is a four television limit per person/postcard and a seven-item total limit. This collection event is the only cost-free, local option to dispose of an older, tube-style television; all types of televisions are accepted. This event is well known for television disposal, since we have limited options to dispose of/recycle televisions (particularly older ones) in Champaign-Urbana.

If you have a number of small items, they can be bundled or put into a small box and counted as only one item.

Some of the items accepted include monitors, printers, microwaves, holiday lights and more. Detailed information on what is accepted and what isn’t accepted is available at the registration website.

Carpooling is allowed and encouraged – so it is possible to have more than one postcard for a single vehicle.

Residency requirements to register: who can participate

For the May event, almost every city and village within the County has agreed to participate in helping to support this event. Persons residing in the following Champaign County communities are eligible to register: Bondville, Broadlands, Champaign, Fisher, Gifford, Homer, Ivesdale, Longview, Ludlow, Mahomet, Ogden, Pesotum, Rantoul, Royal, Sadorus, Savoy, Sidney, St. Joseph, Thomasboro, Tolono, Urbana, and Unincorporated Champaign County.

Who should not register for the event?

Residents who live outside of Champaign County or in non-participating communities in Champaign County should not register for this event.  Which communities in Champaign County are not participating? In 2022, Foosland and Philo. The list of communities not participating in 2023 has not yet been released.

What happens when you register?

Immediately after you register for an event, you will receive a confirmation email and/or text (if you entered a cell phone number). Approximately 10-14 days before the event registrants will receive a postcard in the mail, which serves as a ‘ticket’ into the event.  If registrants do not receive a postcard in the mail before the event, it is acceptable to show their confirmation email/text instead.

Event logistics: Where to go and what to expect

The event will take place at Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Avenue in Champaign. A map of the specific location within the Parkland campus will be provided on your confirmation postcard. On the morning of the event, participants are asked to use the DUNCAN ROAD ENTRANCE into Parkland and then follow the signs.

The events go ahead rain or shine, that includes thunder and lightning.
