Onekama Identified New Location for Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Officials in Onekama have identified a possible new recycling location. The current recycling location at Manistee County Fairgrounds is poised to move to a more permanent location in 2024.

The members of the Onekama Township Board, in a meeting held last month, had decided to purchase a vacant lot near the fairgrounds, which will serve as the township’s new recycling location. The Board had approved an amount of $80,000 towards purchase of the property, which will also house a Department of Public Works building.

Meantime, Township Supervisor Dave Meister stated that Onekama has not yet closed on the sale of the lot, which is located adjacent to the fairground entrance.

For several years, the recycling bins were located at the Onekama Township Hall parking lot for several years. However, with the commencement of resurfacing works on the lot in August this year, the recycling containers were moved to the fairgrounds. Upon completion of the works, the Board opposed bringing the recycling bins back to the Onekama Township Hall. The Hall parking lot is a misfit for housing the recycling site, Meister noted.

The efforts to move the recycling center from the Onekama Township Hall lot to another location in Onekama have been under consideration for several years, as its use had outgrown that area.
