New year, new recycling rules in Sacramento

There are some new rules on what kinds of plastics you can recycle in the city of Sacramento.

The city is now accepting all plastics Nos. 1 through 7 after manufacturers decided to accept more types of plastics.

Last year, the city changed what plastics it would accept after China, which bought recyclables from Sacramento, decided to no longer buy contaminated recyclables.

“They felt those were the kinds of plastics that they could not transform into something else,” said Erin Treadwell, Sacramento community outreach manager for the solid waste and recycling division.

That decision forced Sacramento to limit the plastics it would accept. Now that other manufacturers have decided to accept more types of plastics, the city has expanded what citizens can put in the blue bins.

“What we were trying to do is, again, have the most marketable, the cleanest recyclables possible, so that they would be the most marketable,” Treadwell said.
