New Haven Recycling Day Collected Tons of Unconventional Items

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The New Haven Hometown Recycling Day event provided an opportunity for residents to dump unconventional items. The event held last Saturday, saw collection of several items that cannot be dumped in the curbside recycling bins, including mattresses, electronics and textiles.

The free event, to collect shredded documents, electronics, mattresses, box springs and textiles, was held under the sponsorship of the New Haven Solid Waste and Recycling Authority (NHSWRA) at the Hill Career High School campus.

Lori Vitagliano, executive director of the NHSWRA said that this is the second such event being held during the current year, in response to rising demand from customers. Normally, residents are required to take such items to the New Haven Transfer Station for recycling on Mondays to Saturdays 9AM to 12 Noon. Before taking the waste to the Transfer Station, they are required to pick up a coupon from the city Residential Services Office, he noted.

The Transfer Station does not accept shredding. Also, shredded documents are prohibited from being put in curbside recycling bins. The facilities to handle shredded paper are located in the northern part of the city, which is not easily accessible to all residents. The Hometown Recycling Day event has thus provided residents with an opportunity to get rid of their unwanted paper documents.
