SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has filed a lawsuit against Reynolds Consumer Products and Walmart over Hefty brand recycling bags. The lawsuit, filed in Ramsey County district court, alleges that the bags are not recyclable in the state. Furthermore, it states that the whole materials inside the bag becomes unrecyclable when they are placed at the curb.
According to Keith Ellison, Reynolds and Walmart have been found taking advantage of the good intentions of Minnesota residents by misleadingly marketing ‘recycling’ bags, which could not be recycled, instead causes harm to recycling. The companies must be held accountable for putting their ill-gotten profits ahead of people, environment, and the law, Ellison added.
Additionally, Ellison alleged that both the companies have recently changed marketing language on their websites and packaging.
This is the third time Reynolds is facing lawsuit against its Hefty bags. Earlier in 2022, Connecticut’s attorney general had filed a lawsuit against the company. Also, a private citizen, Lisabeth Hanscom, had filed a similar lawsuit in federal district court in Northern California in 2021.
