Miami-Dade County Reaffirmed Commitment to Build New WTE Facility

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): In Miami-Dade County, Florida, the board of county commissioners decided to reiterate the county's commitment to constructing a new waste-to-energy (WTE) facility. They noted that the facility was necessary due to the county's enormous garbage production. It should be mentioned that the county now uses rail to deliver some of its waste to a landfill located far away.

The board of county commissioners gave the county mayor permission to solicit bids from businesses interested in constructing a WTE facility earlier in February of this year, giving them 120 days to produce a report. After being pressured by a number of environmental organizations and locals who lived close to the suggested locations, the mayor, who had originally supported a new facility, changed his mind.

The Mayor's office hired renowned consultant AtkinsRealis to create a study on market research. Six companies and groups had responded, expressing interest in running a waste-to-energy plant for the county.

During the Wednesday meeting, the board of commissioners voiced concerns about the slowness of the process to find a location and proceed with the opening of a new facility. It required that a choice be taken without further delay.
