Columbia Solid Waste Issued New Recycling Guidelines

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Columbia Solid Waste has partnered with a Jefferson City facility to resume recycling. It has issued a new set of recycling guidelines. Accordingly, the city will immediately begin collecting some recyclable materials. The program will be funded with the City’s recycling budget.

Under the terms of the partnership with Federal Recycling & Waste Solutions, customers will be allowed to use the blue recycling bags for plastic bottles, plastic containers, aluminum beverage cans and metal food cans. All recyclables should be properly rinsed. Also, it is not necessary to remove caps and labels.

According to a news release, residents should not put mixed fibers, including cardboard and paper into the blue bag. These items could be placed at the curb for collection. The blue bag will not accept certain plastic items such as yogurt cups, clamshell produce packages and dairy containers.

The materials from the blue bags will be separated, compacted and hauled to Federal Recycling & Waste Solutions facility Jefferson City. Once the facility becomes full, they will be sent to Midwest Fiber Recycling in Normal, Illinois, where they will be sorted and sold. The profit arising from the sale will be split between Columbia and Federal Recycling & Waste Solutions.
