Mesa County Extends Clean Harbors Contract for Hazardous Waste Disposal Services

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Mesa County Board of Commissioners has approved a one-year contract extension with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. to continue managing hazardous waste disposal services. The Feb. 10, 2026 decision authorizes up to $120,000 under the third amendment of the original agreement, ensuring ongoing compliance with state and federal environmental regulations.

The contract supports operations at Mesa County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which accepts paint, batteries, pesticides, mercury and other regulated materials. The program is offered free to county residents, while qualifying small businesses pay a modest fee to offset disposal costs. Opened more than 20 years ago, the facility now processes over 280,000 pounds of hazardous waste annually requiring specialized handling.

Depending on classification, materials are transported to permitted incineration sites, Subtitle C disposal facilities or approved recycling centers. Federal “cradle-to-grave” regulations mandate full documentation from collection through final disposal. Clean Harbors provides tracking, reporting and regulatory oversight, drawing on more than four decades of hazardous waste management expertise.

County officials said the extension ensures continued environmental protection, safeguarding public health, groundwater and surrounding ecosystems.
