Kent County Diverts 66 Million Pounds from Landfills in 2025, Expands Recycling Efforts

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Residents of Kent County recycled nearly 30,000 tons of material in 2025, helping divert approximately 66 million pounds from local landfills, according to the latest annual report from the Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW).

The total included more than 11,000 tons of mixed paper and over 7,500 tons of cardboard, underscoring continued participation in curbside and drop-off recycling programs.

The county’s SafeChem hazardous waste initiative also recorded strong engagement, with nearly 400,000 items dropped off across five locations. Materials safely processed included 72,215 pounds of motor oil, 71,621 pounds of oil-based paint, 4,000 pounds of batteries, and 23,814 pounds of fertilizer.

Additional recycling volumes comprised 230,000 pounds of electronics, nearly 37,000 pounds of CRT televisions and monitors, 1,452 tires, 1,435 Freon-containing appliances, and 135 propane tanks.

The DPW’s Swap Shop collected 24,515 pounds of reusable household materials and redistributed nearly 11,000 pounds to residents.

Meanwhile, the county’s new polystyrene densifier processed 20,300 pounds of foam polystyrene, enabling material previously excluded from recycling streams to be compacted and repurposed, further advancing landfill diversion goals.
