LyondellBasell to Build Advanced Recycling Plant in Germany

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): LyondellBasell- a leader in the global chemical industry announced that it has made a final investment decision to build its first industrial-scale catalytic advanced recycling demonstration plant at its Wesseling, Germany, site. The plant is expected to have an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year.

The plant will make use of its proprietary MoReTec technology and will be capable of converting post-consumer plastic waste into feedstock, which in turn could be used for producing new plastic materials.

Plastic Recycling Market tobe Worth $61 Billion by 2031

The demonstration plant will close the gap for difficult to recycle plastics, such as mixed or flexible materials, that are currently landfilled or incinerated. Majority of the sorted processed feedstock will be supplied by the joint venture Source One Plastics. The advanced recycled feedstock produced by the facility will be used for the production of medical and food packaging solutions.

Peter Vanacker, CEO, LyondellBasell noted that the announcement is a meaningful step in its efforts to address the global challenge of plastic waste in order to advance a circular economy. By scaling up the catalytic advanced recycling technology, the company aim to return larger volumes of plastic waste back into the value chain, he added.
