SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Film Plastic Recycling Challenge is set to return to Otsego County net week. The Challenge, sponsored by the Otsego County Solid Waste Department, Otsego County Conservation Association and Casella, aims to educate youth and the community about proper recycling of plastic bags and other plastic film items, which are not accepted by regular recycling programs.
The Film Plastic Recycling Challenge focuses on collection of clean, dry plastic film, thus preventing them from ending up in landfills. It is open to all public and private K-12 schools and districts in Otsego County. The Challenge will run from 15th November, 2023 to 24th April, 2024. The winners of the challenge will be declared on Earth Day, 22nd April, 2024, the media release said.
Kyle King, waste management and recycling coordinator, Otsego County noted that the consumption of single use plastic bags is predicted to touch approximately five trillion this year. The high number is despite bag bans being introduced at more and more places. Incidentally, only less than 1% of these bags are properly recycled, he added.
The film plastics included in the challenge comprises of bags, package wrap, bubble wrap, wood pellet bags, zipper-style food storage bags and others.
