SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Liberty Tire Recycling has unveiled plans to establish two state-of-the-art tire recycling facilities in Alabama, following the state’s move to phase out the landfilling of whole tires. The initiative comes as part of Alabama’s broader effort to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable waste management practices over the next few years.
The first of the two facilities is slated to open in early 2026 near Mobile, serving both southern and central Alabama. A second plant will be set up in north Alabama later in the year, with the exact site expected to be announced soon.

Once operational, these facilities will repurpose discarded tires into tire-derived fuel and other reusable materials. The northern Alabama facility will go a step further by producing rubber feedstock, later processed into crumb rubber used in various industrial and infrastructure applications. Together, the two facilities are projected to create around 60 skilled jobs, supporting local economies while advancing Alabama’s recycling goals.
Liberty Tire Recycling CEO Thomas Womble expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, noting that the new plants will significantly strengthen the company’s presence in the Southeast. “We’re thrilled to deepen our commitment to Alabama and its sustainability efforts. These new operations will help us better serve manufacturers and recycling partners while keeping valuable resources out of landfills,” Womble stated.
Alabama currently remains the only state in the southeastern U.S. still permitting the disposal of whole tires in landfills — a practice that has contributed to excessive waste accumulation. The new recycling infrastructure marks a critical step toward reversing that trend and fostering a cleaner, more circular economy.
