Jackson Metro Area E-Waste Collection Day to be Held in October


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Mississippi Farmers Market will host the Jackson Metro Area E-Waste Collection Day on Friday, October 24, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to a news release from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the event will provide citizens in Hinds, Rankin, and Madison counties with an opportunity to get rid of their outdated devices.

According to MDEQ state recycling coordinator Jennifer Wells, the recycling event provides an outlet to recycle valuable materials into new products, theerby reducing waste. Electyronic waste contains heavy metals and other toxins that are harmful to the environment, she reminded.

The items accepted during the event include computers, laptops, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, and computer components, fax machines, desktop copiers, desk phones, and cell phones, televisions, VCR players, DVD players, and electronic games, stereos, radios, and related electronic equipment as well as rechargeable batteries. However, no alkaline batteries will be allowed.

Flat-screen computer monitors will have a recycling fee of $2 each, while CRT computer monitors and televisions will be charged $5 each and $15 each respectively.

Staff from MDEQ and other community partners who co-sponsor the event will be on site to assist residents with unloading.
