The program will allow residents of 22 counties to bring their discarded electronics items to any of the designated 42 Goodwill Keystone area stores and donation centres. The program targets to collect at least half-a-million pounds of e-waste in the first year alone, followed by increased collection in the years after that. The responsible recycling solution will help reduce illegal dumping, thus ensuring environmental protection.

The accepted items include computing and peripheral devices, entertainment electronics, communication devices, visual and imaging equipment and small equipment. However, loose batteries, hazardous household waste, white goods and domestic commercial large appliances will not be accepted.

Jessica Shirley Acting Secretary of the PA Department of Environmental Protection noted that electronic waste contain heavy metals and when allowed to degrade in the environment, they will leach harmful lead, cadmium and arsenic into soil and nearby waterways.
