Fort Wayne Recycling Plant Faces Intense Opposition from Residents

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The proposed recycling plant by Exurban in Fort Wayne’s southeast side has drawn intense opposition from residents and neighbouring farmers. The facility hosts a smelting tower and six additional buildings, all having heights above the 50 feet allowed in that area, sits in a rural zone. The proposal seeking height waiver will return to the Fort Wayne Plan Commission next Monday. The project has to receive final nod from Allen County Commissioners.

The residents and farmers in the region have raised concerns about pollution from the recycling plant, saying that it would disturb the peaceful environment.

The Plan Commission meeting held last Monday was attended by City Councilwoman Sharon Tucker, who stated that she has been receiving numerous e-mails from residents, who seem to be concerned about the environmental impacts and the height of the buildings. Tucker said that additional research is needed before a final approval is granted for the project. The developers need to provide more information so as to clarify the valid concerns of the affected people, she added.

Exurban plans to invest approximately $300 million in building the plant, which it says, will provide employment for nearly 200 people.
