Fire damage forces recycling center to close

WARRENSBURG - The Warrensburg Fire Department responded to the report of a fully involved fire at the recycling drop-off site at Pine and Washington streets.

The fire was reported by a neighbor, and the crew arrived on scene at approximately 4:12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. The fire was extinguished in 16 minutes.

Because water and foam were used to extinguish the fire, the contents of the bin must be taken to a landfill.

Assistant Fire Chief Doyle Oxley said that the cause of the fire is undetermined.

“I’d like to give people the benefit of the doubt,” Oxley said.

It is unknown if the fire was accidental or intentional.

The plastic doors were melted and the metal was warped due to the heat.

"It's just unfortunate," Public Works Director Marvin Coleman.

Coleman said the damage to the unit will cost about $1,000 to repair.

The recycling center will remain closed until the repairs are completed. Public Works does not have an estimated date of completion.

Heartland Waste provides the recycling service for free.

The recycling center was reopened in November 2018 after being closed due to misuse.
