The facility has a capacity to process more than 80 million pounds of plastic waste per year. The pilot operations at the facility had commenced last year. Since then, the company has recycled approximately 15 million pounds of plastic waste.

ExxonMobil had recently announced a joint venture project to boost collection and sorting of large volumes of plastic waste. Its first-of-its-kind plastic waste processing facility in Houston is expected to help supply the Baytown advanced recycling facility. ExxonMobil plans to build advanced recycling facilities at other locations within and outside the U.S., with the aim of achieving a processing capacity of up to 1 billion pounds of plastic waste per year by end-2026.

Karen McKee, president of ExxonMobil Product Solutions Company noted that advanced recycling techniques break down plastics that could not be recycled in traditional, mechanical methods. By doing so, it will help divert tons of plastic waste from landfills, thus supporting a circular economy.
