EREF Report Calls for More Data to Assess EPR Programs

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) announced publication of a research report, which highlights the need for more transparent data in assessing the effectiveness of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs across the globe.

Research has shown that the rules used by different EPR programs typically result in higher recycling rates and more waste being diverted from landfills. Evaluating particular EPR initiatives is challenging, though, mostly because of inconsistent reporting, a lack of baseline data, and the opaqueness of the data that is provided.

The industry requires reliable facts, not just conjecture, to make well-informed investment decisions, according to Bryan Staley, CEO of EREF. Only by implementing more clear region-specific tactics will EPR programs be better understood and more successful.

The materials that are accepted in each EPR program and the architecture of the recycling systems vary from one country to the next. They use non-standard models, which further complicates evaluation. According to the EREF research, more detailed data is required even if EPR is a promising instrument for advancing the objectives of the circular economy.
