As per draft guidelines, the country sells nearly 6 million mobile phones every year. The people in the country are found to store their old mobile phones after purchasing new ones, as many of them contain personal data. A recent survey indicated that nearly one-third of the respondents do not recycle their phone because there are no incentives for doing so. The difficulty in access to recycling centres was also cited as another key reason.

The draft guidelines says that all mobile phone manufacturers and importers needs to have recycling sign designed by the government on products sold by them. Also, they are bound to increase the product recycling rate to 15% by 2025 and to 30% by 2030.

It must be noted that the country had reported record-high recycling rate of 12% in 2022. This is comparatively lower when compared with other countries in the region like Japan and countries in Europe and North America which have recycling rates exceeding 15%.
