Detroit Recycling Hub Faces Opposition from Community

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The environmental leaders and nearby community have raised opposition against the proposed recycling hub facility by Waste Management (WM) at a site in Detroit, which the company currently utilises to transfer waste.

The WM officials assured that the recycling plant would employ high-tech processing techniques. It will make use of scanners and robotic arms to sort materials that it collects from across the state.

However, residents and environmentalists raised bagful of questions, in line with their concerns regarding the facility. The innumerable number of trucks used by the facility for transporting materials are likely to cause pollution in surrounding areas. Replying to the query, the company noted that most of its trucks use RNG and CNG, whose footprints are much lesser than diesel trucks.

The other major concern was with regards to the weight of the trucks on pavement and about their traffic patterns. They noted that a walking and biking path is proposed to pass through the area. Also, the nearby Ferry Street is currently being used as a bike thoroughfare, they pointed out.

Also, a few activists expressed worries that the plant will be used for chemical recycling, which they said would cause pollution.

Meantime, WM said that it will continue to work closely with local officials and community members.
