Council Report Evaluates Columbia’s Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Columbia City, in partnership with RRT Design & Construction, has released a report following comprehensive evaluation of its recycling and waste diversion programs. The report outlines recommendations to improve recycling collection.

The city currently provides waste management services to around 51,000 residents. It offers curbside pickup services to around single-family homes, whereas multi-family homes are required to drop off their recyclables at designated drop-off locations. Also, the city runs a dual-stream recycling program.

According to the report, the recycling and waste management program of the City has three main drawbacks- the indefinite suspension of curbside collection services due to shortage of staff, the high contamination levels in loads delivered to the material recovery facility (MRF) and below par performance by equipment at the MRF.

The City has already declared that its first priority would be to address the crisis in connection with curbside recycling collection. The city aims to put all its resources towards resuming weekly or biweekly curbside collection, for which it needs to reroute recycling routes, the report said.

The report presents two options for collecting dual stream recycling. The first option is to provide customers with two carts for fiber and containers. The second is to provide them with a split-body cart.
