SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Coon Rapids, MN is all set to complete an expansion project at its recycling center. The facility, which reportedly has an intake of over 1.5 million pounds of small appliances, mattresses, batteries, paper, light bulbs and other recyclables every year, has been running out of space.
The expansion project comprises of a new building on the east end of the property at 1827 111th Av. NW. The 130-foot-long building has a dedicated space for storage of cardboard. It must be noted that the recycling center currently stores cardboard on pallets outside the building, thus exposing it to dirt, sunlight and rain.
Also, the expansion will see relocation of the compactor machine that compresses Styrofoam into bricks to the new building. This will allow more space for Styrofoam recycling. Incidentally, Coon Rapids recycling center has been accepting Styrofoam for recycling since 2014.
The redesigned lot will ensure better traffic flow by avoiding congestion. An average of 400 vehicles drive through the yard every day. In addition, the expansion project also results in additional parking space for customer vehicles.
The exciting changes will offer more ways to help protect the environment, recycling center staff noted.
