City of Whitehorse Announced Changes to Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Whitehorse City, Yukon recycling will undergo rampant changes, said a recent press release by Raven Recycling. After 31st December, it will stop operating the 24-hour drop-off bins for recyclable materials. The changes are subsequent to the upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, which will be in effect by end-2025.

The proposed changes to recycling are expected to enable a more comprehensive collection service. The shift in recycling system will help Whitehorse to move towards an EPR system which will ensure maximum materials into the circular economy, noted Heather Ashthorn, Executive Director, Raven Recycling.

The huge success of the public drop-off system has been delaying a more comprehensive, government-run city-wide recycling collection system, to which all Whitehorse residents have access. It must be noted that Whitehorse is one of the few cities in Canada that lacks a city-run blue box program.

Raven Recycling noted that it will continue to process all the materials that come to the facility from communities and from curbside collection. Also, the company would continue to work with the City of Whitehorse and Yukon territory to ensure smooth transition to EPR system, it added.
