City of Hobart, Indiana Ends Curbside Recycling Pickup

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Hobart City Council meeting yesterday approved the proposal to end curbside recycling services. This is on account of high levels of contamination in recycling toters, which made them unsuitable for processing, thus resulting in these items ending up in landfills.

In a statement issued, Mayor Josh Huddleston said that it cannot continue to allow those who recycle correctly to believe that their efforts are actually making a difference. The city residents who still wish to recycle are permitted to take their items to the City Yard located at 340 South Shelby Street. The officials will accept the items after ensuring that they are not contaminated, he noted.

The press release noted that residents will not receive any discount due to the cancellation of curbside recycling services, as the program was offered at no cost to them. The city will not remove recycling toters. The residents are allowed to retain both toters. The green lid will serve as additional garbage toter. They will be charged for only one garbage can pick up per week.

Meantime, the city officials reiterated their commitment to other environmental initiatives, including expansion of its alternate fuel fleet. The city will continue to monitor the recycling market, the press release concluded.
