City of Grand Junction to Launch Pilot Recycling Programs

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Grand Junction, CO announced plans to launch new recycling pilot programs aimed at encouraging residents to recycle and diverting waste from landfills.

The announcement by Jay Valentine, General Services Director, Grand Junction says that pilot programs will be introduced in March next year at around 2,600 households in select areas. The City estimates to divert approximately 52,000 pounds of waste from landfills per year.

The pilot program will launch smaller trash bins for green waste and dual-stream recycling bins for materials such as cardboard, fibers, paper and non-glass containers. The pilot green waste collection would begin in April and end in October. The program would include a “pay as you throw” system for trash containers. The dual stream recycling collections are scheduled twice a month.

The pilot program will not last for full 12-month period. It will be evaluated and scaled at the earliest.

The City was recently recognized by the Colorado Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) with an Innovative Partnership and Collaborations merit award, which was presented at the 2022 Colorado APA Conference awards ceremony held in Vail, Colorado.
