SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The recycling rates in Chicago still hovers in single digits, despite replacement of the old programs with new ones. The nonprofits blamed lack of recycling commitment for the poor recycling rates. The City recycles only 9.8% of its total residential waste, figures suggest.
Michelle Thoma, President, Chicago Recycling Coalition noted that the City has not provided adequate attention to ensure that its recycling programs are implemented in an effective manner. The testimonials of cities with highest recycling rates indicate that there needs to be constant programs to educate residents on what is recyclable and what is not. The falling recycling rates of the City are partly attributable to lack of such awareness programs, Thoma said.
Meantime, Jennifer Walling, Executive Director of the Illinois Environmental Council highlighted that the recycling programs of the City have failed to win the trust of its residents, which can only be overcome through a system of continuous education. The authorities must ensure that the campaigns are made available in multiple languages so as to enhance its accessibility.
The nonprofits called for effective enforcement of laws on books, which would certainly result in better compliance.
