SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): According to a new study, Chattogram city recycles almost 73% of its collected plastic waste, thus making it a global leader in plastic waste management. The city generates approximately 2,57,913 metric tonnes of plastic waste every year, out of which nearly 1,87,079 metric tonnes are recycled. This large-scale recycling drive creates large number of job opportunities, in addition to production of huge quantities of useful products.

The findings of the study were made public during a workshop organized by the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Chittagong, which was attended by more than 120 participants from the plastic waste recycling sector. The study was carried out by Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) Project.
At the same time, the study pointed out that nearly 27% of Chattogram’s plastic waste still ends up in drainages and water bodies, causing serious environmental threats. For instance, the Karnaphuli River is being faced with severe plastic pollution, the study noted.
The study urged authorities to do the needful to promote eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, provide enhanced technical training organize rigorous health awareness campaigns and step up risk mitigation efforts.
