Casella Faces Pressure to Reach 27% EBITDA Margin by 2029
Activist investor Jana Partners is pushing Casella Waste Systems to improve profitability, with analysts identifying acquisition integration and operating efficiencies as key challenges.
MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): Casella Waste Systems is facing increased pressure to improve profitability after activist investor Jana Partners disclosed a stake in the waste management company and called for an EBITDA margin of 27% by 2029.
Jana also urged Casella to appoint a performance improvement consultant to strengthen operational execution and returns on invested capital.
Casella reported an adjusted EBITDA margin of 22.7% in the second quarter of 2026, below the 30%-plus margins achieved by several larger waste management competitors.
Acquisition Integration and Operating Costs Remain Challenges
William Blair analyst Trevor Romeo noted that Casella's adjusted EBITDA margins have remained around 23% annually since 2021, despite substantial growth in adjusted earnings.
Analysts identified several factors affecting profitability, including higher transportation costs in the Northeast, uncertainty around landfill capacity, a significant low-margin brokerage business and the company's smaller scale relative to major competitors.
Integrating recently acquired businesses and improving operational efficiency will be important if Casella is to close the gap with Jana's proposed target.
Mid-Atlantic Synergies Could Help Narrow Margin Gap
Romeo estimates that Casella would need to capture at least $30 million in Mid-Atlantic operating synergies, alongside other improvements, to move closer to Jana's profitability objective.
The company's acquisition strategy has expanded its regional operations, but analysts say integrating those businesses and realizing cost savings remain important to improving financial performance.
The proposed 27% margin remains an investor objective, not a confirmed company commitment.
