Casella Secures Permit to Expand New York C&D Landfill Capacity

The approved Hakes Landfill expansion in Campbell will add approximately 43.3 acres to the disposal area and an estimated 5.8 million cubic yards of additional capacity.

MONTREAL (RecyclingMonster): Casella Waste Systems has received regulatory approval to expand its Hakes Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill in Campbell, New York, adding substantial disposal capacity to the facility.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation authorized an expansion of approximately 43.3 acres within the landfill's disposal area. Casella estimates the project will provide approximately 5.8 million cubic yards of additional disposal capacity.

The Hakes facility is currently permitted to accept up to 466,000 tons of C&D material per year.

Expansion Adds Soil Borrow Area and Disposal Capacity

The project also adds 21.7 acres to the site's soil borrow area, which supplies excavated material used for landfill construction and ongoing operations.

Casella said the expansion, combined with the site's existing permitted airspace, is expected to provide approximately 20 years of capacity at current operating rates.

Casella Plans Infrastructure Upgrades at Hakes Site

Casella President and CEO Ned Coletta said the additional C&D disposal capacity will help the company meet demand while preserving capacity across its municipal solid waste landfill network.

The company also said the expansion provides an opportunity to relocate and construct upgraded infrastructure at the site, including leachate transfer and storage systems and landfill-gas collection and treatment systems.
