Carton Council Announced Grant Programs to Boost Carton Recycling in Schools

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Carton Council has promised to provide funding to schools in the United States and Canada to support their recycling initiatives. It announced that K–12 schools in the US and Canada will be eligible to receive grants of up to $50,000 to create and grow recycling programs for food and beverage cartons.

April 1 to May 31, 2025, is when the new award program will be available. The grant is open to all public and private K–12 schools in the United States and Canada, as well as school districts or boards, school groups, local governments, and anyone else that helps a school with its recycling program. In addition to making sure they have access to the carton recycling program, the schools must obtain administrative approval.

A school typically uses about 75,000 cartons of milk, juice, and other food and drink items. Only around 10% of elementary and secondary schools in the US actively recycle them, though. More than 9% of the waste that is dumped in landfills in Canadian primary schools comes in the form of cartons.

Schools will play a significant role in recycling these valuable materials into usable goods if they participate in the carton recycling program. Jordan Fengel, executive director of the Carton Council, stated that in addition to the environmental advantages, it will assist the schools in achieving considerable economic savings on waste hauling rates.
