CalRecycle Announced $130M in Grant Funding


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): CalRecycle announced its decision to distribute $130.6 million in grant funding in support of 23 infrastructure projects across 15 California counties. The projects funded by the grants are estimated to divert approximately 7.7 million tons of organic waste out of landfills. Furthermore, the funding is expected to create nearly 114 jobs, per CalRecycle.

The grant will help advance projects that meet the SB 1383 diversion goals. The bill passed in 2016 aims to reduce organic waste disposal in the state by 75% by 2025, as compared with 2014 baseline.

Los Angeles County and the cities of Riverside and Redding will receive $10 million each, which will be used to upgrade wastewater treatment plants. The funding received by the city of Napa, California Grinding, SANCO Services in San Diego and the University of California in Davis will be utilized towards building or expanding biofuel facilities, said the news release.

Western Placer Waste Management Authority, Kern County and Agromin will use the grant funding to build or expand composting facilities.

The grant recipients from private sector include Green Valley Recycling in Fresno County and Republic Services of Sonoma County.
