California, Ohio and New Jersey Ramp Up Textile Recycling Programs

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Several U.S. states including California, Ohio and New Jersey are seen moving forward with innovative textile recycling regulations and programs. While CalRecycle is seen ramping up textile EPR implementation, Ohio and New Jersey are seen taking actions to strengthen textile recycling.

The California program, which is being promoted by CalRecycle, is the nation's first extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for textiles. By the end of the present decade, it is anticipated that the EPR for textiles initiative, which was put into effect last September, will have significantly expanded the alternatives for textile recycling, repair, and reuse.

CalRecycle intends to host outreach initiatives and information sessions to help spread the word about the program. On July 17, the first educational session on textile stewardship is planned. The deadline for the PRO's approval is March 1, 2026. By July 1, 2030, the PRO must next provide a strategy for textile collection, repair, and recycling.

A pilot program and its data will be used by SWACO and its partners towards creation of a permanent textile recycling program for the central Ohio region. Also, Union County, New Jersey will expand its textile recycling program by offering an additional drop-off location.
