SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The list of goods that can be recycled curbside has been enlarged by the City of Austin, Texas. Food and beverage cartons as well as coated paper items can now be recycled in the blue recycling carts.
Cartons are often used to package items like milk, juice, protein drinks, soup and creamers. Coated paper products include cups used for hot coffee and other beverages, paper plates and takeout food containers.

When putting the carton or cup on the cart, residents are asked to empty it and leave the cap on. They don't have to be crushed or flattened.
Paper cups and recycling cartons are frequently covered with a layer of substance that increases their durability and moisture resistance. Because of this, recycling them is challenging. To recycle them, recycling centers need specialized equipment.
The amount of rubbish that locals send to landfills will be greatly decreased by collecting more materials in carts. Additionally, recycling paper cups and cartons will help preserve natural resources, lessen Austin's environmental impact, and promote a circular economy.
"The City is thrilled to offer carton and paper cup recycling to all of our customers," said Richard McHale, Director of Austin Resource Recovery. By adding these items, the city will get one step closer to its ambitious 2040 waste-free objective.
