Amazon Achieved 85% Waste Diversion Rate in 2024

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Amazon released its first companywide waste and landfill diversion metrics.

The company's landfill diversion rate increased from 84% in 2023 and 82% in 2022 to 85% in the prior year. Overall, the rate of waste diversion increased to 83% from 79% in 2022 and 82% in 2023. According to projections, 83% of the garbage was recycled or composted in 2024, with the remaining 2% being burned.

The company's continuous efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability across all areas of its operations are reflected in the noteworthy progress in waste and landfill diversion. In order to assist customers at Amazon Fresh outlets in properly sorting waste, the business recently teamed with Glacier, an AI-enabled robots sorting company.

The organization wants to enhance its sorting procedures and lessen the level of contamination in its waste streams. It acknowledged that switching from plastic to paper alternatives still presents technical difficulties. Even though it has collaborated with private sector businesses to find ways to switch supermarket products' plastic packaging to paper-based substitutes, many of these are still ineligible to satisfy the standards for food safety and shelf life.

According to Amazon, the company is determined to lessen its environmental impact in the years to come.
