SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Waste Management (WM) has secured a new contract from Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to process the city's recyclable materials beginning in April 2027. The five-year agreement also includes options for two additional three-year extensions.
The new contract replaces the city's long-running agreement with Rabanco, a Republic Services company that has handled Seattle's recyclables since 2007. City officials believe WM's advanced recycling technology will help in improving the quality of recyclable materials and reducing contamination.
To support the contract, WM plans to upgrade its recycling facility in Tacoma and make improvements at two transfer stations in Seattle. Incidentally, the company intends to process recyclables at its Tacoma and Woodinville materials recovery facilities.
According to Seattle Public Utilities, the new contract carries higher processing costs than the current agreement. However, these costs are expected to be offset by higher-quality recycled materials, increased commodity revenues, and lower disposal expenses, it said.
The contract will not officially begin until 2027. The agreement was finalized to give WM sufficiently enough time to complete facility upgrades, install new equipment, and prepare its operations before services begin.
