While Waste Management suspends recycling, a small company in Paradise is still operating

As recyclables from Waste Management are temporarily taken to the landfill to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), a smaller company is still operating its recyclables business.

As of March 30, Waste Management in Butte County made the change to temporarily send recyclables to the Neal Road Landfill in Chico. Regular curbside collection of waste and recycling continues, but recyclables won’t be sorted out like they normally do.

Instead, the items will be taking up space in the landfill—for now. However, in Paradise, Northern Recycling and Waste Services Center is still open for business. Operations Manager, Andrew Guidi says they’re able to take the recyclables to their parent company in Napa. Where they have staff members to work a sort line and separate the items. Guidi knows the importance of the temporary change mandated for Waste Management.

"We’re taking extreme measures to be protected because our staff knows the importance of how severe this is and if it were to rip through our company it would put us in a pretty big hole," said Guidi.

Northern Recycling and Waste is trying to do their part by continuing to recycle. Their main goal is to make sure that items that can be recycled don’t clog up the landfill, given its finite amount of space.
