Vancouver Expands Flexible Plastics Recycling with New Pink Carts

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Pink recycling bins for flexible plastics are being rolled out across Vancouver condos and apartment buildings, marking a major expansion of curbside recycling services. Beginning Monday, residents in multi-family buildings using Recycle BC will be able to dispose of items such as candy wrappers, produce bags and Ziploc-style packaging in dedicated pink carts.

Recycle BC confirmed that approximately 4,500 pink bins are being delivered citywide. Executive Director Sam Baker said the initiative is designed to divert flexible plastics — materials that can be folded or crinkled — from landfills and make recycling more convenient for residents. Collected plastics will be processed at a Metro Vancouver facility and converted into pellets used to manufacture new products including packaging, plant pots and garbage cans.

Accepted materials include bread and produce bags, overwrap packaging, stand-up pouches, chip bags, cereal liners, bubble wrap and plastic net bags. Recycle BC aims to collect 50% of flexible plastics by 2027.

The program rollout also includes new multi-stream collection trucks and new service contractors, with Recycling Alternative and Emterra Environmental taking over operations in different city zones.
