SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Residents of Tompkins County can now place paper beverage cups in their curbside recycling bins. This follows a major update to the county's recycling program. The revised rules, which took effect on July 1, are part of the newly released 2026-2027 curbside recycling guide aimed at improving waste recovery and promoting more sustainable disposal practices.

The updated guide, published by the Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management, provides detailed recycling instructions along with a year-long collection schedule. It also encourages residents to reduce waste through various initiatives available across the county.

Paper cups were previously left out of the recycling program because they contain a thin plastic coating. In the past, separating this plastic layer from the paper was technically challenging. However, improvements in recycling technology now allow the lining to be removed efficiently.

County officials said only empty paper cups should be placed in recycling bins. Lids, straws, and other accessories must be removed before disposal. Most disposable paper cups used for hot coffee, tea, soft drinks, and similar beverages qualify under the new rules. However, foam or Styrofoam cups continue to be excluded from the program.
