Thanksgiving Holiday to Affect Trash and Recycling Collection Across Tampa Bay Region

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Residents across several Tampa Bay counties and municipalities should prepare for changes to their waste and recycling pickup schedules due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Local officials have announced a series of temporary service suspensions and modified collection days beginning Thursday.

Hillsborough County confirmed that trash, recycling, and yard waste services will not operate on Thanksgiving Day, and all public disposal facilities will be closed. Regular pickup routes will resume on Friday, November 28, the county said.

The City of Tampa also announced that both residential and commercial waste collection will be paused on Thursday. The city reported that Thursday’s scheduled pickups will shift to Friday, and Friday’s routes will move to Saturday, ensuring that customers still receive weekly service.

In Pinellas County, officials stated that the Solid Waste Disposal Complex will shut down on Thursday and reopen with normal operating hours — 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. — on both Friday and Saturday. However, the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Center and Swap Shop will remain closed from Thursday through Saturday, reopening after the holiday weekend.

The City of St. Petersburg noted that its regular Monday, Tuesday, and Friday service schedules will remain unchanged. No residential trash or recycling collection will occur on Thursday, the city clarified. In nearby Clearwater, officials said that the usual Thursday collection has been rescheduled to Wednesday.

Meanwhile, unincorporated Polk County residents will not receive curbside waste collection on Thanksgiving. Both the North Central Landfill and the North Central Transfer Station will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27. In the City of Lakeland, Thursday collection will shift to Friday and Friday’s pickup will move to Saturday.

Local governments are urging residents to place bins curbside early on revised days and to expect potentially later-than-usual pickup times due to increased volume after the holiday.
