SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) has announced a strategic collaboration with Brave Industries aimed at significantly expanding polystyrene recycling capabilities across North America. The initiative marks a major step toward strengthening circular economy practices within the plastics sector.
Under the partnership, PSRA and Brave Industries will work to improve the collection and processing of all polystyrene formats. This includes rigid non-foam types such as high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS), in addition to foam-based materials like expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS).

The program will initially roll out in Denver, Colorado, and Baltimore, Maryland—two regions recognized for leading extended producer responsibility (EPR) policy adoption. As part of the initiative, PSRA will allocate grant funding to enhance local recycling infrastructure and support Brave Industries in scaling its processing capacity and geographic footprint.
Recycled polystyrene collected through the program will be directed to certified end markets to manufacture new products, supporting long-term material reuse.
Richard Shaw, Chairman of the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance, emphasized that enabling recycling of all polystyrene types is essential to advancing a sustainable circular economy. “Our goal is to make polystyrene widely recyclable and ensure it can continually re-enter the value chain,” he stated.
